Welcome to the Japan Pavilion in EPCOT’s World Showcase!

The History of the Japan Pavilion

The Japan Pavilion opened in 1982. It was one of the original pavilions. The Japan Pavilion at EPCOT is a beautiful blend of traditional Japanese culture and modern influences where you can explore the history and enjoy the tastes of Japan. Let’s take a look at how this unique pavilion.

Architecture and Design

The Pagoda

The five-story pagoda stands is a beautiful example of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. The 5-story pagoda was inspired by the Horyuji Temple from the 7th century. Each level represents one of the five elements: earth, water, fire, wind, and sky.

Torii Gate

The iconic entrance features a stunning torii gate, which symbolizes the transition from the mundane to the sacred. This red gate, with its striking silhouette against the lagoon, sets the tone for the rich cultural journey ahead.

Castles and Temples

Within the pavilion, you’ll also find a replica of the 17th-century White Heron Castle (Himeji Castle). The original castle in Japan is one of the most impressive surviving castles from the Edo Period. This building houses the Mitsukoshi Department Store and restaurants

Shishi-Odoshi Fountain

In the beautiful gardens of the pavilion, you can find the traditional shishi-odoshi, or “deer chaser,” fountain. This bamboo water feature is designed to ward off wildlife and adds a touch of tranquility to the surroundings. While not for drinking, it’s a lovely spot to relax and enjoy the sounds of flowing water.

The Japan Pavilion’s gardens

The Japan Pavilion’s gardens are a haven of tranquility amidst the bustling park. They provide a perfect retreat to relax and soak in the beauty of Japanese landscaping.

Koi Ponds

The serene koi ponds are a major highlight. These ponds are filled with colorful koi fish, which are considered symbols of good fortune and perseverance in Japanese culture. Watching the koi gracefully swim is a calming experience.

Stone Lantern

There is a stone lantern in the gardens that was a gift from the government of Japan.

Bonsai Trees

Scattered throughout the pavilion are meticulously pruned bonsai trees. These miniature trees are a symbol of patience and meticulous care, showcasing the art of bonsai which has been practiced for centuries in Japan.

Zen Garden

The pavilion also features a traditional Zen garden, complete with carefully arranged rocks, gravel, and minimalistic plantings. It’s a perfect spot for a moment of meditation and reflection.

Seasonal Blooms

If you are visiting during the Flower & Garden Festival be sure to take time to walk through the Japan Pavilion. The gardens are beautiful during this festival.

You can read all about the Flower & Garden Festival Global Gardens here.

Attractions and Shows

The Japan Pavilion at EPCOT has one of my favorite shows in the World Showcase…

Matsuriza drummers

The Pavilion also hosts cultural shows such as the Matsuriza drum group. The drummers perform on a stage near the base of the five-story pagoda. These performances highlight traditional Japanese arts and entertain guests with their powerful rhythms. The Matsuriza Drummers offer an electrifying performance that you simply can’t miss. These talented drummers perform traditional Taiko drumming, a form of Japanese percussion that dates back centuries. The performances are high-energy, featuring powerful rhythms and synchronized movements that captivate audiences.

Kawaii, which means “cute” in Japanese, is a cultural phenomenon that has taken the world by storm. The exhibit showcases the history and impact of kawaii culture, from its origins to its influence on global pop culture.

Shopping in the Japan Pavilion

The Mitsukoshi Department Store

This is one of our favorite stops in World Showcase. This store is actually part of a real Japanese chain, one of the oldest department stores in the world. This massive large store has genuine Japanese items, including beautiful kimonos, my favorite stationary supplies, anime merchandise ( Pokémon, Sailor Moon, etc.), Hello Kitty, origami paper, Japanese beauty products, sushi-making kids, beautiful bowls and tea sets, and fun snacks and drinks from Japan.

Fun Activities in the Japan Pavilion

Pick-a-Pearl

In the Mitsukoshi Department Store, you will find an oyster tank where you can pay to pick an oyster and have it opened. The Japan Cast Members make it a super fun experience, plus you get to keep the pearl. You can also have the pearl set into jewelry, which is a fun souvenir.

Snacks from Japan

One of our favorite things to do in this pavilion is shop at the Mitsukoshi Department Store. We always grab a few snacks from Japan, like the different flavored KitKats, chips, mochi, and other traditional Japanese candies.
